Every year, towards the end of April, the Victorian mill village of Saltaire celebrates its UNESCO World Heritage Site status with a series of special events over “World Heritage Weekend”. In 2017, the Higher Coach Road Residents’ Group held a picnic to celebrate the distinct heritage of their own housing estate — which lies directly west of Saltaire’s Roberts Park, and within the world heritage “buffer zone”. Since the estate was built in the 1950s, though, it was this time period that was celebrated.
