Thanks Martin. Yes, the best explanation I’ve heard is that you have a 1 in 100 chance of your number coming up in a 100 ball lottery draw, but that it could still come up 3 times in a row. Even so, the odds seem to need revising in some locations…

.. experienced “1 in 100 year floods” a total of three times in the last ten years.
The terminology confuses people – what this means is that there’s a 1:100 chance in each year of the event (rainfall, flow or level) happening.
