I did a tour of the big metropolitan authorities speaking about water sensitive urban design on behalf of university of Cape Town about 5 years ago. We also visited townships to see for ourselves what the issues were. Each township had water issues that were different. But pretty much all metropolitan areas were the same – they’d tried providing appropriate infrastructure but failed. Failures included local township politics, fancy infrastructure that failed on first day of use. Suggestions of different types of living in terrace blocks were met with derision as residents need homes they can walk right round. But the bottom line problem is Govt promised communities they could have western style water systems and that is what they expect. I’ll be back there in December but don’t expect to see any change for people’s lives.
